Music Video Editing Workshop

In todays lesson we had a work shop all about how to edit together all of our footage for once we have filmed our music videos and we have all of our footage. He explained that there would be four stages to our editing process. The performance cut, narrative cut, effects then colour. Applying each one after another to achieve our finished product. In terms of what we learned, we were taught how to sync our footage to our soundtrack and the way that we do this is by using an I pad that shows a time code that is applicable to the time line that is on Premier Pro the software that we are using. So long as the time code on the I-pad and the time code one the software are synced with one another the footage from that shot will be in time with the time code at the beginning of the soundtrack.

He then gave us three rules that we should aim to apply to our music videos. Rule 1, illustrate the music through editing on the screen. For example, try and ensure that what the viewers are seeing correlates with what they are hearing in order to try and achieve the best results possible. Rule 2, group our shots together, this will allow or work flow to be a lot more organised as we will be able to easily depict which shot we would like to see and when. Rule 4, follow the movement meaning that we should try and simply ensure that each set of shots leads on nicely to the next in order to maintain fluidity throughout the music video.

Test Video Analysis

In todays lesson me and Matilda finished filming our test video with Kiera. Matilda did all of the filming on her phone whilst I was in charge of the lighting. For all of the lighting in each of the shots I used two florescent lights. The colours that we ended up using were blue, light blue, pink and red. All of the lighting was hand held apart from the shots that we took today whereby you can see that we positioned the light blue behind one of the frost frames to create a damped coloured background whilst the pink light shined over her face which created a really nice lighting effect. The only shot that had more than two florescent lights was when we asked Kiera to sit on the stairs where we had three lights along the the wall of the stairs which looked really cool.

Now that Matilda has finished the edit for our test video it is now evident what works well and what doesn’t. In terms of what looks good, I would personally say that the majority of the shots of Kiera look good. Although none of the sets have been created we tried our best to find different locations around school that seem as though they would work for our video. With this in mind one of the first cons that I have with our test video would be the fact that none of the sets work with one another other than the shots with the florescent lighting as they all blend together really nicely. Another con that i have depicted from our test video is the shot duration for each shot. They are all too short and the entirety of the video feels really snappy and short cut. When we have our actual set designs we will be able to shoot multiple shots from different camera angles on each set which will give us more than enough footage for our music video and will also allow us show different shots in the same sets for longer periods of time in order to make the music video feel less jumpy from shot to shot.

Set Meeting

In today’s lesson we finally had a meeting with the person who is going to be helping us organise Our set designs and make them come to life. In this meeting we showed all of the sites that we had in mind for a music video which ended up being a total of roughly six possibly seven. She was on board with all of the sets and believed that she could see what the music video would look like as a whole. One of the only sets that she felt as though would not be possible was The one that had white tiling in the background to give off a London cheap station sort of vibe. The reason being that it would simply be too difficult to try and arrange a wall of white tiling as it can also be quite expensive. From this however, we still have a good selection of sets that are going to be applicable for our music video. The master document that we presented to Fran (the set designer) can be seen below.

In terms of what I did that was key for our master document was design one of the main sets for our music video using the green photo that I found as a reference.

Analysis Of Digipak's

In todays lesson we were told to look at Digipaks of artist within the same genre and analyse the similar conventions in the design on both the inside as well as the outside of each one. Sarah went to a HMV over the weekend and took images of the different Digipak's so that now in this lesson we can compare and see what genre conventions we may need to include in our's.

In terms of similar conventions between these three digipaks on the front cover of all of them we can clearly see a medium close up of the artist themselves. What this does is it shows the Artist in what you could possibly say is their best light, due to the fact that these photos are all taken in what appears to be a photography studio with studio lighting and make up. The two digipaks on the right both appear to have some form of filter that has been edited in, in order to emphasise the colours that are visible. Yet it would be safe to say that the front cover of the digipak in the middle has had the most work done to it as you can visibly see that in the editing stage of this photo they have added multiple filters to individualise their product. The theme for each of these digipaks remains the same through the layout and design of all three of these. For example, on the front of each of them as previously discussed we see the artist but then on the back we see a list of all of the songs and features (if there are any) that are in the CD. The font of the text on the back of the digipaks is very small. However, it is still easily readable for any consumer that is curious about the songs that are within the product.
In terms if dimensions the digipaks that we will be creating should be 140 mm wide and have a hight of 125mm along the outside of the digipak there should be information will all of the legal information in a small font. Whereby there is then space for the inside of the pack to be a lot more free flowing with images.
With all of this in mind. For a start I feel as though when it comes to creating our own digipaks we should follow the trend of this genre and display kiera who is going to be acting as our artist on the front cover in a photography studio lit setting that will not have any correlation to our music video studio setting as they are two different products.

Prototype planning

In todays lesson we discussed what a prototype is and why it is necessary for us to create one for our music video. For example, what we are about to create is a brief version of our music video which should be able to give us a clear idea that is relative to how our music video will be perceived.

With this in mind we set out a plan to start thinking of how we could do a proper test shoot even though we aren't going to necessarily going to have the sets completed in the background of our main character. What we are trying to achieve is the full music video with all of the ideas that we have in place so that we can try and work out what ideas work and what ideas we need to neglect or build on to make sure that each shot continues to draw in the audiences attention so that our video remains fluid.

Our current planning is to find out the different locations, costumes and props.

Props- Big Chairs, tea table, desk lamp, ladder.

With this in mind I ran around school trying to find different locations that we could use for our test shoot. And this is what I found for our demo sets.

Matilda drew this in order to try and give a visual representation of what we are properly trying to achieve

Correlating Photos

In todays lesson we were told to try and research for more photos that are more accurate to what sort of elements we would like to have in our music video. With this in mind I searched key words with the word 'aesthetic' following in the search bar and picked out the images that best suite what we as a group would like. As a group we have now got a total of two to three different slides each totalling to almost nine different slides of accurate ideas. This has now given us a greater understanding of different ideas that we would like to to try and correlate into our music video. All of this is much more applicable to what we are trying to achieve.

Demo Test Shoot

Today Luke did a test shoot with Kiera when they got back to their boarding house. With this test shoot Luke ensured that Kiera was going to wear outfits similar to what she may wear on the shoot day. However, Some people in my group after watching the test shoot feel as though she could wear something slightly closer to what she was describing to us in the interview. For example, she said that she loves to wear fashionably tailored suit. However, seeing her in this test shoot has most definitely convinced everyone in the group that she is the one for the part.
